Technical Support Careers: Do You Have What it Takes?

Technical Support Careers: Do You Have What it Takes?

If you’ve ever had to call a help desk, you know how frustrating experiencing a technology breakdown can be. Having a compassionate and helpful person on the other end of the line can make all the difference! IT careers can be challenging, but also rewarding. Here are the 5 skills you’ll need for a technical support career:

Problem solving: Do you like to solve puzzles? That’s exactly what technical support staff does every day. You’ll first need to discover what might be wrong with a customer’s computer, network or software. Then, using your knowledge, skills and experience, you’ll work hard to solve their problems, understanding that each situation may be just a little different from the last.

Fine attention to detail: You won’t be able to find the problem if you don’t pay close attention to the details. Being detail-oriented means that you’ll check all possible solutions to a problem and make certain that nothing is overlooked.

"Technology is continually evolving and advancing. If you’re an avid learner who always likes to discover even more, then a career in Information Technology might be right for you."

Computer skills: If you’re already familiar with computers and software, you may have a good foundation to attain further skills that can help you build a career in technical support. At American National University, we can train you for entry level work in Information Technology. We’ll even help prepare you to sit for such certification exams as CompTIA A +, CompTIA Network +, CompTIA Security + and Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate.

Great people skills: Whether you’re working in-person, over a network or on the telephone, you need excellent people skills to find success in technical support. American National University can help train you in listening to what your customers talk through their technical problems and patiently help them solve whatever issues they are having.

Desire to learn: Technology is continually evolving and advancing. If you’re an avid learner who always likes to discover even more, then a career in Information Technology might be right for you. Technical support specialists can expect above average job growth through 2024.1
