Use these 5 Study Tips to Reach Success
Whether you take courses in person or online, you’ll need to dedicate adequate time outside of your program to complete assignments and prepare for exams. What tips and tricks do you use to ensure your academic success? Check out these 5 study tips and let us know if you have more:
Use the course syllabus: On the very first day of classes, sync the course syllabus with your personal calendar or planner. Note all assignments, quiz, and test dates. For long term projects, set up milestones so you don’t get caught off guard by a deadline you can’t meet. Pay attention throughout the course for any new announcements, changes, and updates. You don’t want to miss anything and you also don’t want to rush to complete an assignment that’s been given an extension.
Have a dedicated space: Set up somewhere that’s a study spot just for you. It should have all the materials and equipment you need, like a desk, chair, computer, text books, paper, pens, pencils, and whatever else you might need to complete assignments or study. Make it as comfortable and conducive to study as you can, with minimal distractions. And add some personal touches, like inspirational quotes and pictures that remind you that you deserve the better future you’re working toward.
Whether you take courses in person or online, you'll need to dedicate adequate time outside of your program to complete assignments and prepare for exams.
Stick to a study schedule: Make studying part of your weekly routine. Even if you don’t have an upcoming exam, set aside time to do homework, review class materials, work on projects, and start prepping for the next big test. And when it comes to those exams, only you know how long it’ll take you to prepare. Consider giving yourself a full week to study for that first big exam. Spend at least an hour each day to find out what you know –and what you don’t. You’ll be able to adjust study time as you become more comfortable with the material and coursework.
Stay organized: Disorganization is one of the leading causes of poor grades. You simply can’t do well if you don’t know where things are or what’s due when. Before and after each study session, take time to organize your materials. Use lists to make sure you don’t forget anything. Chart your progress by assignment and grades so you always know where you stand in a particular class. And when you’re confused about something, don’t wait until it’s too late to take action; ask your instructor or a classmate for clarification.
Fuel your efforts: You wouldn’t run your car without gas, so don’t try to study when you’re not well-rested and fed. Include water and healthy snacks in your study space if they won’t be a distraction. Avoid caffeine and sugar and instead opt for fruits and nuts that will help you power through and refuel your brain.
