Sally Abbott - Instructor

Sally Abbott



Sally Abbott completed a program in radiologic technology, earning an Associate in Applied Science degree and passing the national board exam. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Ferrum College and a Master of Science degree in education from Virginia Tech. She worked in the medical field for 10 years, including several years at Virginia Beach General Hospital and Chesapeake General Hospital. Sally has also taught in several public schools around the state and has been an instructor at ANU for over 10 years, in both the general education and health science departments.

Elizabeth Barker - Department Chair - Administrative Office Professional

Department Chair - Administrative Office Professional


Elizabeth Gayle Barker has served in a variety of teaching positions within the educational field. She received her bachelor's degree and Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate from Radford College (now University) and her master's degree from the University of Virginia. She is Microsoft Office Specialist certified, an RMA proctor, campus administrator, and an assistant librarian. Elizabeth is an instructor of keyboarding, Microsoft Office, general education, and medical office courses at the Martinsville Campus, where she currently serves as Department Chair of the Administrative Office Professional program.

Joan  Blankenship - Instructor

Joan Blankenship


Master of Science, Education; RN

Joan Blankenship has worked in both the medical field and the business field for more than 40 years and presently serves as a consultant to a national environmental conservation organization. Joan is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Science in Education degree. She teaches both medical and business courses for the Martinsville Campus.

Sheilla Coplin - Instructor

Sheilla Coplin


A.A.S., B.S. (Education), B.S. (Nursing), M.A.

Sheilla Coplin has worked in the medical field for over 25 years. She completed her nursing degree from Patrick Henry Community College and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Averett University, a bachelor's degree in nursing from Old Dominion University, and a Master of Arts degree in Education from George Mason University. Her clinical experience includes intensive care and obstetrics. Sheilla teaches all clinical courses, as well as medical courses, in addition to environmental science, biology, preparatory English, and math at the Martinsville Campus.

Robert Divers - Instructor

Robert Divers



Robert Divers has been self-employed in the financial services industry since 2001. From 2007 to 2008, he was able to successfully increase his company's sales by 200%. He has previously worked in all facets of the business world, including accounting, finance, human resources, customer service, management, and marketing. Prior to his years in business, Robert held the position of Production Supervisor with a large furniture manufacturing company. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and is an instructor at the National College Martinsville Campus.

Christopher Harding - Instructor

Christopher Harding has worked with technology for more than 15 years and is presently a senior analyst for a global marketed membership support firm, in addition to serving as an instructor at the Martinsville Campus. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Patrick Henry Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in software engineering with a minor in database administration from Radford University. He also holds numerous industry certifications, including Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician, CompTIA A+, and CompTIA Network+.

John Inman - Instructor

John Inman



John Inman has worked in education for more than 20 years and is presently teaching at the middle school level in the area of Business & Information Technology. John's previous teaching positions were at the high school level in the areas of Special Education and Business & Information Technology. He holds an Associate of Arts and Science degree in Electronics from Patrick Henry Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics from Greensboro College, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Averett University. John is currently an instructor of technology courses at the ANU Martinsville Campus, where he has been for over 15 years.

Glenda Jenkins - Pharmacy Technician Department Chair

Pharmacy Technician Department Chair


Glenda Jenkins has been in the medical field for 37 years. She obtained her Registered Nursing degree from Patrick Henry Community College and is a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Glenda teaches medical assisting, pharmacy technician, and clinical courses and is currently serving as Department Chair of the Pharmacy Technician Program at the Martinsville Campus.

Gary  Jenkins - Director of Health Care Education

Gary Jenkins has worked in the medical field for 39 years. He holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from Patrick Henry Community College and is a Registered Nurse. Gary is an instructor of medical courses, including the medical clinical classes. He currently serves as the Director of Health Care Education for the Martinsville Campus, where he supervises the Medical Assisting and Pharmacy Technician Externship programs.

Gregory Jessup - Instructor

Gregory Jessup



Gregory Jessup has been teaching various levels of English, from high school to GED and college courses, since 1998, and more than 15 of those years have been with ANU. He is an English instructor at the Martinsville Campus and previously served as General Education department chair. Gregory holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree, both in English from Radford University. He was the recipient of the Virginia Career College Association's "Teacher of the Year Award" in 2014.

Alice Martin has worked in the accounting profession for more than 25 years serving as Accounts Payable Manager, General Accounting Supervisor, and Property Accountant for a Fortune 500 company. She received her Master of Business Administration degree from Averett University and her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Virginia Union University. Alice is an instructor of accounting and business courses for the Martinsville Campus and currently serves as Department Chair for the Accounting program.

Glenda Meade - Instructor

Glenda Meade


AAS Business Management, AAS Medical Assisting, CMA

Glenda Meade holds Associate of Applied Science degrees in Business Management and Medical Assisting and is currently working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She is a Certified Medical Assistant and works for a head and neck surgeon. Glenda is an instructor in the medical assisting program at the Martinsville Campus.

Sarah  Rakes - Instructor

Sarah Rakes



Sarah Rakes is currently a biology instructor specializing in human biology and zoology. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a chemistry minor and a focus in pre-veterinary science from Christopher Newport University of Newport News, VA. Sarah previously worked as a veterinary technician for six years. While attending Christopher Newport University, she worked as a biology research technician for three years. She also interned at the Virginia Museum of Natural History as a biology research assistant. Sarah teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology.

Patricia Stephens worked as a high school math teacher for 20 years. She also served as an associate at East Carolina University. She holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics, as well as a master of divinity degree. Patricia is an instructor of Preparatory Math, Business Math, and Algebra at the Martinsville Campus.

Pamela Van Nutt - Department Chair - Computer Applications Technology

Department Chair - Computer Applications Technology


Pamela Van Nutt worked as a computer programmer within business and academia for 10 years while living in New York. She has been an instructor at the Martinsville Campus for the past 10 years and has been Department Chair for the Computer Application Technology program for much of that time. Pam teaches COM and ISE courses. She obtained a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York- Institute of Technology.

Lisa Williams - Instructor

Lisa Williams has worked in the medical field for the past 16 years and is presently the Billing Manager with Martinsville Physician Practices. She received her associate degree from National College in Martinsville and holds two coding certifications. Lisa teaches the Coding and Billing courses in the Medical Billing and Coding Program at the Martinsville Campus.

Gwen Williams has been an instructor for more than 10 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Service Counseling from Old Dominion University. Gwen is an instructor at the Martinsville Campus.
