Health Information Management Graduate Has the Code to Career Success

June 16, 2016 was a momentous day for Zachary Linder as he accepted his diploma during the ANU Indianapolis Campus commencement ceremony and accepted a job offer from St. Vincent Health.

Zachary is thrilled to have found a job so quickly after graduating from the health information management program at ANU. The growing demand for certified health information management (HIM) professionals was one reason he was drawn to the field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job growth outlook for medical records and health information technicians will be “much faster than average” between 2014-2024.

After deciding to pursue a degree in HIM, Zachary first enrolled at a local community college. But when he found himself on a waiting list, he transferred to ANU where he was able to get started in his HIM classes right away. ”I found out that they were accredited the same as Ivy Tech, so I talked to them, applied, and got in,” he recalled.

“I feel like with this degree the sky's the limit.”

At ANU, Zachary’s favorite part of his program was learning from his experienced instructors who shared their knowledge of the field and tricks of the trade. “They were almost like my mentors. They essentially helped me do what I needed to do to be successful,” he explained. “I followed all of their advice relentlessly. I would not have been here today without them.”

He also volunteered to work at Community Health Network and later completed his externship there--an experience he found to be invaluable. “It was incredible. I got to really network, talk to more people, and continue to build my resume,” he shared.

After passing the exam to become certified as a registered health information technician (RHIT) and being hired by St. Vincent, where he’ll be working in medical coding and reimbursement, Zachary is looking forward to a long and rewarding career. “I might change it up in the future--I might want to be a director or I might want to go implement electronic record systems,” he said. “I feel like with this degree the sky’s the limit.”
