Campus Alumnus Inspires Class of 2016 in Commencement Address

Jul 06, 2016

The ANU Lynchburg Campus celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2016 at a commencement ceremony held on Friday, June 10 at Tree of Life Ministries. Hundreds of family members, friends, faculty, and staff members came out to cheer on the graduates, as each of them took their turn walking across the stage to accept their hard-earned diplomas.

Lynchburg Campus alumnus Michael Matthews served as the commencement speaker and was also presented with the campus’s Alumni Hall of Achievement Award during the ceremony. In his commencement address, Michael spoke of his career journey to finding his true passion in print media with the Lynchburg News & Advance. He encouraged the graduates to pursue what makes them happy, because that is the only way to find true success in life.

“It was probably one of the most heartfelt ceremonies we've ever had.”

Other award winners of the evening included: Amie Katherine Smith, Achievement Award; Jamie Graves, Leadership Award; Tameka Glover, E.M. Coulter Award; Debra Toliver, Joseph H. Hurn Award; and Daniel Paterson, M.A. Smythe Award.

“It was probably one of the most heartfelt ceremonies we’ve ever had,” commented campus director Bill Baker. “We acknowledge the graduates, but also their families and support systems who helped get them there. We are a family-based university; we have had multiple generations of family members graduate from our campus.”
