University Physicians Group Offers Students Real-World Experience

The Charlottesville Campus recently recognized the University Physicians Group (UPG) as a Distinguished Community Employer for their support of the campus’s medical billing and coding program. Since 2010, when the campus formed a partnership with UPG, several students have completed successful externships at UPG where they were able to get hands-on experience in a real medical office. In addition to their support of the externship program, UPG has also hired numerous graduates from the program as well.

Tina Rosson, human resources generalist for UPG, said, “We are glad to support the program and our departments benefit from our [partnership].” Debby Houston, billing and document specialist for UPG agreed with Tina. Debby’s job includes the oversight of multiple outpatient clinics in Charlottesville and surrounding counties and she is also the extern supervisor. She is able to provide students a wide range of training opportunities.
