Your Learning Experience

American National University’s Business Administration Accounting bachelor’s degree program offers a well-rounded curriculum to prepare you to be a future business leader. In this program you will:

• Develop an extensive background in general accounting principles, which includes, but is not limited to, accounts receivable, accounts payable, invoicing, and cost control. Additionally, you will learn tax and cost accounting, corporate accounting, and managing long-term assets and liabilities related to the accounting profession.
• Build proficiency in the various software tools to create accurate business documents, perform essential accounting functions, and support management decision-making with metrics and analyses relevant to the job.
• Enhance problem-solving and communication skills to effectively convey financial information to internal and external stakeholders, which can include anyone from employers, clients, and business partners. Additionally, there will be a focus on research and report writing to communicate this type of information, with earned skills of text preparation, analyzing data, developing graphics, and effective presentation.
• Understand the interconnected roles of different business disciplines, which can include, but is not limited to, business management, sales and contract law, strategic management, and how concepts like these complement the accounting functions you will do in an organization.
• Gain a deep appreciation for the ethical, legal, and professional standards that are required of accountants. This is taught in courses like BUS123 – Practical Law, where you will discuss the US constitution as it relates to the business community.

Experiential Learning Track

Upon completion of 36 credit hours, students may apply to pursue the Experiential Learning Track, which requires students to maintain professional experiences related to their field of study during their enrollment, of at least five (5) hours per week. This does not include the final program course, BUS499 Business Externship and Capstone. Successful entry to the Experiential Learning Track will require an attestation by the students and their supervisors indicating the average number of hours worked each week and how long the work experience is expected to last.

Students interested in pursuing the Experiential Learning Track should schedule a meeting with their academic advisor and dean to discuss this track and to obtain the attestation form.

CPA Exam

The accounting program is intended to deepen understanding and proficiency in accounting principles and practices, but it is not tailored to meet the state requirements for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
